My name is Moloair. You might think I’m much older when you first see me, but I’m actually only 17 years old. I may not be as eye-catching as some other elephants, so I’m often overlooked. Still, I have one very unique feature: a large hole at the tip of my trunk. It was caused by an accident while I was living in a circus, and it means I sometimes spill water and have a slight lisp when I trumpet. I also don’t like having my trunk touched, so please understand if I seem a little stand-offish when you visit.
In 2016, I was rescued and brought to Maew’s first sanctuary in Surin, where my healing journey slowly began. I was nervous and deeply distressed, and for a long time I cried every day. I had never had a friend before, but a gentle elephant named Nong Pech stayed close and tried to comfort me. At first, I pushed her away, unsure how to trust. But she was patient, and eventually I let her in. Today, we share a quiet bond that grows stronger with time.
In 2019, Kwan Samui joined us. She reminded me of myself when I was scared and alone, so she was welcomed into our little group and soon became part of our trio. The three of us are watched over by Granny Sudarat, who cares for us with wisdom and strength—and she is my favourite.
Now, I feel myself growing up. I’m learning how to live more confidently and trying not to act like a child anymore. One day, I hope to be a good leader for others. My journey is still unfolding, but I’m learning, healing, and finding my place—one step at a time.
